Merrill by shrouded-artist Merrill by shrouded-artist
Merrill

My version of a slightly older, more mature Merrill, from the Dragon Age 2 videogame, by Bioware.

I gave her longer hair, as I generally do. I made only a few tweaks to her outfit, but I did remove her fur shoulder pads from the game, as I felt it too similar to the Morrigan Concept design.

*I didn't go with the DA2 thin Elf body type, opting for a more fuller look.

Before I read the desciption I was looking at her face and I was thinking about how I didn't like it because it seemed a bit older, but then I did read the description and realized you meant for it to appear that way. So since that is the case I love it it! But I still prefer the current/younger look of Merril.

I second selvokaz.  The instant I saw it, I thought, "Ah, an older, more mature Merrill."  She looks older, of course, but I think the big thing is that she now looks thoughtful rather than a bit lost.  You have obviously nailed your intention for this piece right on the head.

even before I read your description I looked at the piece and thought, she looks like a much more mature/hardened Merril, attractive still.

It's true. It's what she might look like in Inquisitor if she started accepting responsibility for her actions and maybe got in a romance.

i think it safe to say that this version of merrill its way better them the original dragon age 2 version, even tought i really like merrill, she is one of the followers that don't keep bitching about stuff and the cutiest, but this version is way sexy, warrior, and groun independent woman like that should be in the goddamnd game in the first place, anyway, qreat work

Her look is a hell of a lot more better than all of the elves in DA2. Plus I like of how you posed her that made her look a bit majestic.

I like your version far better than DA2. To tell the truth absolutely hated DA2's elf bodies and it seemed rather... I suppose sloppy is the best word that comes to mind, and perhaps unprofessional, to just make a big change like that after setting it one way in the first game. Not to mention how 99$ of the Elves ears suddenly were pushed out. You can do that yourself in the toolkit for origins and yet none of the Elves had that and then suddenly they all, practically, do - even ones we previously saw before that did NOT have pushed out ears. How does an entire race change liek that? Evolution - and that does NOT happen over night like in this case where they suddenly all get taller and unnaturally (even for anoerxic supermodels who've been photoshopped skinnier) skinny and nearly all their ears get pushed forward. And how do the developers explain such a massive change? With a wave of the hand, dismissing it as nothing. That, and other issues, makes me hardly even consider DA2 cannon; it's more like a mod. I take that back I've seen mods fifty times better that don;t make such changes and then don't even bother a realsitic, or even crappy, explanation.

Yeah, I didn't much care for many of the changes in DA2 as well. I don't really like drastic style changes like that mid-series, so I think I can understand where you come from.

It's actually not unprofessional considering how companies do this sort of thing all the time. It's a matter of making shifts gradual like in Mass Effect (Fem sheps boobs just...get perkier each game >.>)

The problem with Origins elves is that they looked too human. That being said the DA2 elves do look a tad too different. They need to find a happy medium. The overall art change wouldn't be terrible if they balanced Elves faces a bit more and stopped making humans look all puffy in the face( Alistair kinda looks as though he was stung by bees).

Anywho I love this design, but I'm curious as to why shrouded-artist gave Merrill long hair. :)

Just because lots of people are unprofessional doesn't mean it isn't unprofessional. DLC is example of widespread unprofessionalism in the name of greed too. Just because they all do it doesn't mean its right. Elves and humans should look a lot alike. I could always tell the difference and making them taller only makes it more confusing to those people, hence why they had to mash in their faces and push their ears and screw them up. Although, yes human faces aren't on top of their game either esp. for some.

No DLC really isn't. By definition not every DLC has functioned as some scheme to take peoples money...in fact most DLC is vastly different. Sometimes it is expanded quests such as "Witch Hunt" or weapons packs such as in ME,, or just fun alternate costumes like in Arkham asylum. There is a vast difference between "fair" and unprofessional. Is having DLC locked on a disk "unfair" maybe, but unprofessional not reall. How is it unprofessional and how are we defining unprofessional in the context of this conversation?

In terms of art work it really depends on the changes. For example the Batman Animated Series was one continuous thing, however the art style shifted so it matched the Superman and later Justice League cartoons. Another example is the artistic shift in both the Harvest Moon series and Legend of Zelda. By what seems to be your opinion all of these artistic differences are "unprofessional". If you are talking about the quality of the artistic change I agree they made misteps, but if you are talking about any change at all thats just nonsensical. an issue with Dragon Age: Origins is that some of the technology has changed as did some of the people involved in the process. Merill looks far far better in DA2 than in DA:O for instance, Isabella did as well. The world of Thedas is still evolving in its depiction and they are still figuring out how certain species, races, and ethnicities look and dress in the game. As the series matures art changes of a kind are to be expected, and from the start Bioware came out and said they willingly went in another artistic direction to reflect that Dragon Age II is a COMPLETELY different story than Dragon Age: Origins. To say they should set an overall style at this point is like saying because Batwoman and Batman share the same universe they should share the same art style and overall design in layout. This is simply not the case.

I'm not talking about all changes. I'm talking about radically forcing the change of the entire race overnight. Although, the DA2 graphics engine did suck as far as humans and Elves go; though humans made no changes the graphics still sucked for them (most of them). As for they are still figuring out what they want to do, then you don't commit something to stone until you are certain otherwise you stick with your decision. Tis shows indecisiveness and is thus unprofessional. If you read my journals you'd have an idea of some of the issues that bother me from DA1 to 2. It's not just graphics.

I'm not going to argue with you, I just wanted to let you know know its not the graphics style change overall (the inability to keep the story straight is a bigger issue aside from the Elves); as I've said plenty of times plenty of places I feel the way I do and you feel the way you do. I'm def. not changing my mind and if you aren't yours then theres no point wasting time arguing. The designers are very lazy and DLC IS very greedy IMO and not in yours end of story. Now, please stop wasting my time trying to get me to change my mind cause I ain't gonna be able to do it.

Apparently, they're redoing the elves' design again in DA3.
I wouldn't mind if this was how it turned out.

Guess who has a new favourite desktop wallpaper? :)

This is probably one of your best bits of Dragon Age fanart yet, and I love how you've taken one of the best characters in DAII and made her even better. Merrill has this graceful, confident maturity to her here, and you get the sense she's become a much more experienced adventurer, willing and capable to traverse any dungeon for artefacts or clues. Very well done!
